"A girl should be two things: who and what she wants". Coco Chanel
A jumpsuit is, without a doubt, a head to toe statement trend that creates an effortless striking iconic silhouette beyond a simple dress. However, badly chosen it can make you go from a fashion hero to a fashion zero.
Some fashion trends come and go, very few have staying power. The jumpsuit has evolved and adapted over the years and is now an iconic piece of clothing. For fashionistas like myself who like versatility and outfits that last longer than one season a jumpsuit is a must. They are cool, chic and yet timeless.
It isn’t the easiest piece of clothing to pull off but hopefully this guide will help you to wear a jumpsuit like a fashion star this summer. Keep scrolling to see my top tips for the jumpsuits you’ll be wearing all summer long.
3 main rules you may want to follow choosing a jumpsuit
1.Wide vs. Cropped. Wide-leg jumpsuits that finishes just above the ground look great on a tall silhouette, while slim, cropped styles help petites to avoid looking swamped in the fabric.
2.Formal vs. Casual. A sleek and well-tailored jumpsuit that flatters your figure vs. a loose-fit jumpsuit that features an elasticated or drawstring waist.
3.Accessories such as jewellery, shoes and belts can be a great way to add chic and glamour to your jumpsuit.
Choosing a Jumpsuit
It’s all about finding the right fit especially that jumpsuits come in so many forms and shapes. In general, styles that are fitted at the waist and then looser on the legs tend to be the most flattering by the way of elongating the silhouette. If you are tall, wide-leg jumpsuits that finish just above the ground will be highly complementary. If you are vertically challenged, you may want to opt for a slim, cropped style instead to avoid looking swamped in the fabric.
Formal vs. casual
While a dress may seem like the only option, it will rarely have the same impact as a jumpsuit. Jumpsuits can be just as elegant and polished and they come in as many forms and styles plus they offer an out-of-the-box wow factor that will earn you some serious style points. Hands up, even though I have a number of jumpsuits in my wardrobe when it comes to formal events like weddings or birthdays I always reach out for a dress and this needs to change! Let’s face it, it’s so much easier to cut shapes in trousers rather than a polished pencil dress.
Stating the obvious, but casual jumpsuits are relaxed, super comfortable and oh-so-chic, especially those that feature an elasticated or drawstring waist! There are so many varieties available now, from cotton to denim in a range of silhouettes. If you plan to wear flats with your jumpsuit, remember to pick a pair of shoes/lace-up sandals that finishes at or slightly above the ankles. This will help to create an illusion of an elongated silhouette.
Your imaginations is the limit here. The easiest way is to throw a jacket over a jumpsuit. You can dress it up with a stylish blazer or down with a leather jacket or even with a jacket tied around your waist. The other option that appears to be quite popular at the moment is to layer a shirt or top underneath your jumpsuit. It works with dresses so why not to extend this trick onto jumpsuits.
Accessories / Belts, Bold Jewellery and Heels
Accessories help to keep things chic! Choose the wrong accessories, and the whole look can become sloppy and unstylish.
Belts are fantastic to with a jumpsuit and they help to define a waist in a highly flattering way. I like belts in a contrasting colour to break up the monochromatic line of the jumpsuit. It works incredibly well if you match the colour of your belt with the shoes for a well put-together outfit.
Jumpsuits, especially monochromatic ones, can sometimes look a little plain without bold accessories. Nice jewellery such as chunky necklaces or statement earrings can add another dimension and some fun to an otherwise plain jumpsuit.
While jumpsuits can be flattering some styles can make you appear shorter than what you are. One of the best tricks to create a lengthen look is by adding a pair of high stilettos to your look.
There is no formal rule for how you should wear hair however some dos look better than other with certain styles. Wearing hair down looks incredibly well with a relaxed casual jumpsuit style. It also helps to balance the look where informal style reveals more skin around the shoulders and chest.
Formal jumpsuits tend to cover shoulders and chest more and therefore a polished up-do will help lengthen your neck to avoid an overwhelming amount of coverage in the area.
