"I don’t think there is ever a wrong time for a polka dot". Marc Jacobs.
With the ever-growing trends that consume the catwalk and high street, it can be quite overwhelming to stay up to date and even more to keep replenishing my wardrobe. Every season there is a new trend that experiences a huge comeback, so the next big thing isn’t always easy to predict.
From Marilyn Monroe’s signature spotty swimwear to Kate Moss’s polka dot party wear, cute dots are strongly coming back in fashion, much to Cruella De Vil’s delight!
From romantic blouses, tulip skirts to statement accessories and retro swimwear, the print is taking over in every form this season. Micro, maxi, coloured polka dots or mixed with other patterns, there is everything the heart could possibly desire.
Did you know that polka dots have their origins in the tradition of the Czech form of dance – polka dance, and the word "polka" is derived from the Polish for "woman" – in Czech it translates to "little girl"?
However, if you still associate polka dots with Minnie Mouse or the cute dresses you wore as a little girl, it’s time to rethink this surprisingly versatile and elegant print.
Tips and tricks
If you’re just easing yourself into the polka dot trend, then sometimes it works better if you start with baby steps and swap one item from your outfit with a spotted piece.
I keep mentioning how versatility is incredibly important to me and polka dot pieces are most definitely one of the classic wardrobe icons. It has outshined its fellow patterns and has proven, that, with a simple blazer, jeans, trousers, skirt and even accessories can add such a feminine touch or a bold addition to an outfit.
Timeless classy retro look
Not everyone likes vintage inspired clothes, however with wisely chosen shapes and styles you can transform cheesy looks to trendy fashionista. Think a fun wrap dress or trendy off-the-shoulder top. Or look for simple shapes like a tulip skirt or well-cut pants to make a basic feel fresh again. Feeling more adventures, go for fun colour options rather than the classic black and white combo.
Spots have always been associated with femininity so it only makes sense to curate an all girly look. The feminine style is all about soft shades and lightweight fabrics, so steer clear of darker colours if a girlish look is what you are trying to achieve.
Playful and fun
Wearing dots does not necessary mean looking like a child or a Minnie Mouse impersonator. The trick is to keep your silhouette modern and those dots fairly small. If you favour large round circles try to keep the rest of your outfits minimal.
Not so girly?
Finish the look with some edgy accessories to toughen up the ultra-feminine print and voila. How about a pair of gladiator sandals or a wide leather belt.
Nothing screams timeless chic and elegance than an all-black outfit. I adore black pieces with a small polka dot print for a classier look or an all black look finished with some polka dot accessories. This is a perfect way to embrace the spotty trend for the workplace or a date with your girls.
If you’re totally in love with spots and quite confident wearing them, then try out a head-to-toe look. To avoid looking OTT stick with neutral tones and ensure each of your garments has the same sized spots.

The beauty of spots is that they are timeless and won’t date from one season to the next. They remind me of movies from the 50’s and the beautiful women who wore perfectly tailored dresses. Polka dots were and still are the epitome of femininity and a symbol of fashion history dating back to unforgettable style icons like Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe.
